A handwoven kilim is a simple rug made from warp (cotton or wool) and weft (wool) threads, usually woven on a vertical loom using the wool of domestic animals. Each region has its own unique design. Despite the significant influence of modernism in our country, this art has managed to preserve its authenticity. In rural, nomadic, and sometimes urban lifestyles, kilims are used not only as floor coverings but also as clothing, tablecloths, saddlebags, bags, curtains, and even for decorating nomadic tents.

One of the most famous Iranian kilims is the Kurdish kilim rug from Khorasan. Currently, the Kurds of Khorasan live in the northern regions of Khorasan Razavi and North Khorasan provinces. Weaving Kurdish tablecloths is one of the important handwoven crafts in North Khorasan. Due to the availability of Kurdish sheep wool, Khorasan Kurdish kilims are often made of wool and less commonly of cotton fibers. The yarns used in Khorasan Kurdish kilims are often locally sourced and produced by villagers and nomads in the same regions, and they are dyed with natural plant dyes.
